“Russian Ballerina Too Big a Star for the Bolshoi
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater sacked an ice-cream-loving prima ballerina Tuesday, saying she was too heavy and too tall for most of her dance partners to lift.
Anastasia Volochkova, one of Russia’s best-known ballerinas, has been publicly feuding with the theater over a new contract and the Bolshoi’s claims she was too heavy to dance with.”
I’m sure this sends a good healthy message to our future ballerinas …or tells us that male ballet dancers aren’t very strong :ohwell:
5’7″ and 110 lbs…I would say she is about 20 lbs underweight. Maybe the male dancers should do some workouts to make their muscles stronger!!
yeah i know… sheesh… way to encourage people’s self-esteem! that’s so depressing. …lol, i sorta have a dream (that will never come true by the way) of being a dancer professionally… ballet has always intrigued me. but now i only dance on my own, in the moon light… i was going to this one really cool dance teacher’s class for… 12 years i think… and then this year she just doesn’t want me in her class any more… it’s weird. she’s being real vague about it. that’s okay. *doesn’t stop me from dancing!* 🙂 or maybe i’m just covering up the hurt, trying to smile and grin through pain. –?– hmmm. but, man, i’m reading “Reviving Ophelia” now, and i’m just at the second part, where Mary Pipher is talking about how the society and it’s stereotypical expectations (ehm, i mean DEMANDS) for how everyone should exactly behave and etc, (lol– “etc”…) causes so many people to weaken and give in and put aside their real selves and live only to make others satisfied… becasue they fit into the cookie-cutter “norm”… and so many natural gifts are lost this way, spirits damaged… it’s really what keeps all those psychiatrists in good business… but this ballerina-being-too-heavy-bullshit, just isn’t helping the epidemic of the starving, dying Self that inhabits way too many a hollow shell of a person these days…

Well Gabriel I think it may be a little of both. My best friends boyfriend is a dancer for the San Francisco Ballet and he is a bulimic/anorexic and all of the other male dancers are too. Unfortunately it is common practice to have an eating disorder and be a dancer, no matter what your gender is.Those male dancers might not be able to lift her b/c they really are too weak.
In my ballet class there are larger dancers that would be classified over weight but you still watch them mesmerized as ever when they perform. Dancing should never be about weight and its quite sad that this is what it has become. Why should we have to be anorexic to be sucessful in dance?
